Watt of London, representatives of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s estate. I am under special obligation to Mr. Denis Conan Doyle for his interest and assistance, and to Mr. Bernard De Voto for expert comment on the Western interlude in A Study in Scarlet. The book was prepared with special referrence to the needs of younger readers. Two experienced tearchers, miss Hortense L. Harris of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Miss J. Grace Walker of Cicrero, Illimois, have been kind enough ot read the copy througout and have made valuable suggestions as to how much comment high school students can endure. But I believe some older readers also may find information and amusement in the notes. I have a livelier hope of this since I have seen undoubted evidences of pleasure in a highly critical assistant not previously interested in Holmes an dWatson.
